AIC 4 UMASS Lowell 3 – History amidst a battle won

AIC Hockey did something they haven’t done in a while. They made history in finishing above .500 against non conference opponents for the first time ever. This win ensured them a strong start to their second half and sets them up to build towards the postseason.

They also did something else they haven’t done in a while.

They scored all three types of goals. They scored a shorthanded goal to open scoring by Brett Rylance. Soon after John Lundy would add another goal , a power play marker just 10 seconds into it to make it 2-0 for Head Coach Eric Lang’s team. In the second Alfred Lindberg would add an even strength marker to make it 3-0 before Lowell would score the next two. This happened mere moments after the Yellow Jackets almost made it 4-1. Alexander Malinowski added another impressive tally to his ledger, and then Jake Stella notched an extra attacker goal for Lowell to provide the final margin. The game was rated about a “b minus” from Lang for how the team finished as he praised his team’s ability to push through adversity as Lowell ground back into this one to provide the final margin. Nills Wallstrom played another smooth game in net for AIC finishing with a consistent 34 saves.

One thing that stood out though for AIC. Lang praised the line of Malinowski , Lindberg, and Lundy for coming together to provide a calming “first-line” that Lang discussed as a newer thing for his group. The team stayed together, Nills had his goalie mates cheering him on the entire way, and the group kept a lot of grade a looks away from him. With a newer tool of a true scoring first line of Lundy, Lindberg, and Malinowski, AIC finished 2023 with the way they hope to ring in 2024, with many team efforts, strong scoring, and a win that goes beyond the box score to focus on team unity and building the brand of this great game Lang is perfecting as AIC Head Coach.
