CPH Wins 12UAA CHL Championship!

Hear from Troy Schwab on a big weekend for the 12 UAA CPH team.

“The 12UAA CPH team traveled to the eye of the storm in Raleigh this past weekend to compete in the CHL playoffs. CPH 12UAA entered the weekend in 1st place and the number 1 seed in the tournament. This was going to be anyone’s tournament to win, especially with games being played on their opponent’s home ice.

Game 1 was a hard fought game between the 1st place CPH and 2nd place Canes Black who had split their last regular season series. This was a non-elimination game and it was a back-and-forth affair that resulted in a 2-2 tie. With CPH entering the day as the #1 seed, after the tie, they would stay the #1 seed.

Next up, they would play their semi-final game against the Hurricanes Girls team. The Hurricanes Girls team won both of their round robin games. The girls play a physical, fast paced style of hockey, and got the better of CPH in both of their previous two meetings in the regular season. CPH came out flying and played possibly their strongest game of the season. As advertised, it was a physical, aggressive, emotional hockey game from the drop of the puck to the buzzer. Despite having to kill off multiple late game penalties, CPH was able to hang on and win the game 2-1 to setup a rematch against the Canes Black for the Championship.

In the Championship game, CPH played a solid first period, but a fluky bounce off a CPH stick on the power play ended up in the back of their net with only a few seconds left in the 1st. To say the wind was out of the sails of CPH would be an understatement, but the worst was yet to come. The Canes hemmed CPH in their own zone shift, after shift, after shift in the 2nd period. With 5 mins left in the 2nd the Canes finally broke thru and scored a Power Play goal to take what appeared to be a crippling 2-0 lead. CPH used their only time-out for one last effort to stop the bleeding and gain an ounce of momentum. 78 seconds later CPH came to life on a goal that just squeaked in the nearside post on the goalie. Now just 1 shot away from tying, CPH didn’t just have a pulse, they were alive and well, and took over the game! They scored again to tie it on the very next shift. CPH rode the momentum wave into the 3rd period, scoring early to take the 3-2 lead and proceeded to shut down the Canes and go on to win the championship in thrilling fashion.

An outstanding season capped off by an outstanding performance Sunday in Raleigh by this entire group.”
