What happened for Army to get its first win of the season against Holy Cross? Well Barron Woodring scores a late third period goal to give the Black Knights the lead and the team played shut down defense all night around Evan Szary.

Beyond that lets go into some key points from last night’s win with Associate Head Coach Zach McKelvie.

On Barron’s development as a complete player he said, “Barron continues to progress as he has a high ceiling. He has a lot of nice attributes that translate at this level and he puts in the work on and off the ice. Although he really started to to play well the second half last year and off to a good start this year, we are really excited to see the player he can become because there is a lot there.

On what this win means for coaching legend and Army Head Coach Brian Riley in his final season behind the bench

“For coach I think every win this year probably means a little more for him and tonight is no different. With that said it’s a good win but now it’s time to move on and try and be better on night two vs Holy Cross.”

On how well Szary played in his 36 save shutout

“Evan played really well tonight. He was calm and in control the whole game. I think both goalies played well and it made for an entertaining game. He loves to compete and be in games like tonight.”

He talked about what has to improve for the team to have a chance at coming home with six points.

“To be successful tomorrow, I think we will have to be a lot better. We did some nice things and competed but really need to focus on cleaning up some of our puck touches & being much better on the faceoff dot. It’s a hard rink to play in because things happen so fast, so competing on Faceoffs, winning stick battles, and managing pucks are important to be successful.”

He finished with talking about the team game his defense played and why they were standouts on the night.

“I think that all our defense played pretty well but in particular Gilbert and Zueger. They just made it hard on Holy Cross and competed every shift.”

The two teams battle in the series finale at 5 pm today at the Hart Center.
